Beekeeping as a Business
In order to overcome the social and economic malaise experienced by
some developing countries many people are looking to micro economic
enterprises as a way to salvation.
Beekeeping as a Business replaces an earlier publication entitled
Beekeeping in Rural Development that is now out of print. It was
considered timely to revise the information and produce a text for use
at field level.
Beekeeping provides a good example of one activity that has a strong
local tradition in many developing countries. It is an activity that
provides rural people with a source of nutrition and income. It is a
sustainable form of agriculture that is highly beneficial to the
environment and provides reasons for the retention of native habitats
and potentially increased yields from food and forage crops. It can
also be used to economic advantage in conjunction with forest
plantation for if thought is given to species that offer suitable
forage a crop can be harvested without felling a tree!
The joy of a beekeeping business is that it does not require expensive
ongoing aid. The demand is for information and this publication
presents the basic knowledge required in a readable and clearly
illustrated form. Clearly aimed at Africa it is a good basic hand book
and has relevance wherever bees are kept.
